Queer Resources Center Prepares for Gaypril

By Caitlin Sweeney‘13Contributing Writer

Every year the Queer Resource Center paints Walker Wall rainbow for the kick-off to Gaypril, the queer pride month at the 5Cs. Last year, Beverage Scavvy participants painted over the rainbow within 24 hours of its completion. These members of the 5C community were instructed to write their teams’ names on Walker Wall as one task for the scavenger hunt. Unfortunately, many of the purported names were offensive and derogatory homophobic and racist slurs and images. While the intentions behind the slurs are somewhat unclear, the event sparked a fiery debate across the five campuses regarding the visibility and safety of queer students on campus.

This year, as the QRC gears up to paint Walker Wall rainbow yet again, we have paused to reflect on last year’s incident. In response, we would like to reclaim painting over the rainbow by inviting groups that are allied to or otherwise a part of the queer community on campus to paint their names on the rainbow. This gesture highlights the supportive voices available for queer and allied students on campus. The QRC would like to recognize the incident from last year and respond to it by increasing the visibility of the coalitions that the queer community has with other 5C groups. Additionally, this Gaypril event will create space for all voices that are supportive of the queer community to be heard and seen.

If you are part of a group that does support or would like to support the queer community, please come paint Walker Wall on Sunday, April 3 from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. There will be tacos and live music from Mariachi Serrano de Claremont, Nora and the Brights and Proper Portions. You will be given the opportunity to help paint the rainbow as well as to paint your group’s name on the wall. We want as many supportive voices to be heard as possible. Reclaim the rainbow!
